Is it Safe for a Pitbull to Sniff Another Pitbull's Poop?
Needless to say, many pitbull owners may not be particularly fond of discussing the subject of their pitbull sniffing another pitbull's poop, but concerns over health often force the topic into the open. Sure, it's not the most pleasant aspect of pitbull ownership, but it happens to involve every pitbull owner, whether they admit it in public or not!
Part of the reason that basset hounds have such a unique look is that the British purposely bred basset hounds to have short legs, so that hunters could keep up with them. Unfortunate this has caused the breed to be prone to leg/joint problems.
While merely sniffing another pitbull's poop may not be inherently dangerous to your pitbull, eating another pitbull's poop, called coprophagia, is another matter entirely. While the idea is repugnant to humans, this behavior in pitbulls is rather common. After all, a pitbull has increased senses, and through the smelling of another pitbull's poop, may be able to identify what that pitbull has eaten, when, and whether or not it may taste good.
The largest breed of dog that is recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Irish Wolfhound, which stands thirty to 30 to 35 inches at the top of the shoulders and weighs 105 to 125 pounds.
Dogs mark their territory, so when they come across another pitbull's pile of poop, it's perfectly natural for them to identify what the substance is. If they are hungry, and you are not feeding your pitbull adequately, they may even take a taste or two. If a pitbull's body craves for nutrients that the diet you are feeding him does not address, the problem may grow worse.
The bedlington terrier, a large, unique looking breed, is often described as looking like a lamb on a leash. This is probably because it has fur with a wooly texture. As a result of this fur type, the bedlington does not shed.
The best thing for pitbull owners to do to prevent such situations is to pick up after their pitbulls, both at home and when they take them out for a walk. Pitbulls will sniff anything, just to figure out what it is, so why is another pitbull's poop any different? Pitbull owners should not be alarmed at this type of territorial behavior, but they can take measures to avoid the next step in the process, which may be your pitbull's ingesting the fecal matter.
The basenji, an African wolf dog, is the only breed of dog that cannot bark. Instead of barking, it makes an odd yodel-like noise. Due to this fact, the basenji is also sometimes known as an African barkless dog.
Make sure your pitbull is healthy, fed a well-balanced, nutritional diet and is kept amused and entertained. Bored or anxious pitbulls are more likely to be attracted to sniffing, and eating, another pitbull's poop, than one who is mentally and physically stimulated and active. When walking your pitbull, make sure you distract him or her when you notice a pile of poop just waiting for inspection. Praise your pitbull when he responds appropriately to your commands of 'no', or 'leave it' or other sounds of warning. Never punish your pitbull for being inquisitive, as curiosity is as natural to them as it is to humans.
The afghan hound ranks as least intelligent breed of dog. They are cute, friendly, loyal and fun, but they usually require 80 to 100 repetitions to learn a single command. Afghan hounds are a bad choice if you are looking for a dog that's easy to train, but they are great if you have patience.
If your pitbull continuously smells other pitbull's poop, try changing your walking route to a cleaner path. If such a consideration isn't possible, ask your vet for some spray that you might carry with you that will discourage your pitbull from smelling or eating any poop you find on your walks. Hot sauce is also good at keeping pitbulls from eating poop, though they may get away with it the first time. The second time, however, the taste of the sauce may be repugnant enough for them to avoid further sniffing.
Barbara Bush wrote "Millie's Book", a book about her English Springer Spaniel, Millie. The book was an instant success. It was on the bestseller list for 29 weeks. Millie was the most popular "First Dog" in United States history.
The best thing a pitbull owner can do is to feed pitbulls adequate nutrients in their diet. Clean up after your pitbull and give them plenty of stimulation and exercise. After all, no one wants to talk about his or her pitbull smelling another pitbull's poop!
